# Staking

## Definition

Staking is the act of committing crypto assets to a Proof-of-Stake system or related service to participate directly or indirectly in validation and potentially earn protocol rewards.

## What it means in practice

Native validator staking, liquid staking and custodial staking are different arrangements with different risks.

## How this concept appears in Terenval Wallet

An ordinary ETH balance in Terenval should not be described as staked unless the user deliberately enters a separate staking or earning arrangement.

**Important:** Distinguish protocol staking from promotional yield products and understand who controls the assets.
