# Seed phrase checksum

## Definition

A seed phrase checksum is validation information embedded in certain mnemonic schemes, including BIP-39, that helps detect some invalid word combinations or ordering errors.

## What it means in practice

A checksum can tell software that a mnemonic is structurally invalid, but a valid checksum does not prove the phrase belongs to the intended wallet.

## How this concept appears in Terenval Wallet

Terenval import validation can use mnemonic rules locally, while the recovery phrase itself should remain on the user's device.

**Important:** Never submit a phrase to an online checksum service just to verify it.
