# Recovery phrase

## Definition

A recovery phrase is a set of words used to restore access to a compatible self-custody wallet; in many wallets it is the same concept commonly called a seed phrase or mnemonic.

## What it means in practice

Recovery depends not only on the correct words but also on compatible derivation rules, address formats, account indexes and any additional passphrase that may have been used.

## How this concept appears in Terenval Wallet

Terenval's recovery/import flow is a first-party example of using recovery material locally to recreate supported Bitcoin, Ethereum and EVM/L2 accounts.

**Important:** A legitimate recovery flow may require the phrase locally in the wallet, but ordinary support conversations should not.
