# Native token

## Definition

A native token or native coin is the asset built directly into a blockchain's protocol and commonly used to pay that network's transaction fees.

## What it means in practice

ETH is native to Ethereum and BTC is native to Bitcoin, while ERC-20 tokens are contract-based assets.

## How this concept appears in Terenval Wallet

Terenval presents supported native network assets in their respective network contexts, which matters for paying fees and avoiding wrong-network transfers.

**Important:** A wrapped token with a familiar ticker is not necessarily the native asset of the selected chain.
