# Metal backup

## Definition

A metal backup is a physical recovery backup engraved, stamped or otherwise recorded on durable metal to improve resistance to fire, water and long-term environmental damage.

## What it means in practice

Metal improves physical durability but does not protect against theft, incorrect word order or unauthorized viewing.

## How this concept appears in Terenval Wallet

A Terenval recovery phrase can be backed up on a durable offline medium chosen by the user; Terenval does not need a server copy of it.

**Important:** Store physical backups where unauthorized access and a single local disaster are both considered.
