# Layer 2

## Definition

Layer 2 is a scaling system built on top of a base blockchain such as Ethereum that executes or batches activity outside the base layer while relying on the base chain for some form of settlement, data or security.

## What it means in practice

Different L2 designs use different rollup, bridge, fee and finality mechanisms. Assets on an L2 are not automatically the same balance as assets on Ethereum mainnet.

## How this concept appears in Terenval Wallet

Terenval Wallet includes several Ethereum L2 networks such as Optimism, Arbitrum One and Base alongside Ethereum mainnet.

**Important:** Verify the exact L2 network and bridge path before moving assets; a lower fee does not remove cross-network compatibility risk.
