# Gap limit

## Definition

Gap limit is a wallet scanning rule that determines how many consecutive unused derived addresses may be checked before the wallet stops looking for further historical activity.

## What it means in practice

It is most relevant to HD-wallet address discovery and can affect whether older or unusually spaced accounts appear automatically.

## How this concept appears in Terenval Wallet

If a restored Terenval account does not show expected history, derivation and discovery behavior should be investigated before assuming funds are lost.

**Important:** Do not expose the seed to another tool solely because an account is not immediately discovered.
