# Base fee

## Definition

Base fee is the protocol-calculated minimum fee per unit of gas that an EIP-1559 Ethereum transaction must cover.

## What it means in practice

The base fee changes from block to block with demand and is burned rather than paid to the block proposer.

## How this concept appears in Terenval Wallet

When Terenval shows Ethereum fees, part of the cost can reflect the network's base-fee mechanism rather than a wallet service charge.

**Important:** A rising base fee reflects network demand, not an independent Terenval price increase.
