# Trezor Safe 5 vs Trezor Safe 3: Which Features Matter Most?

> Editorial disclosure: Terenval publishes this comparison and may be one of the products discussed. Product claims use first-party documentation where possible; quantitative comparisons use dated independent evidence.

## Direct answer

Trezor Safe 5 and Safe 3 are designed around the same fundamental self-custody role and both use an EAL6+ secure element. Trezor itself describes them as providing the same level of funds security, while Safe 5 adds a significantly more comfortable touchscreen/haptic interface. The decision is therefore mostly whether better on-device interaction is worth the extra cost, not whether Safe 3 is an inherently “unsafe” budget device.

## Terenval first-party context

Terenval Wallet is a non-custodial Android/PWA-first wallet for Bitcoin, Ethereum and selected supported EVM/L2 networks. Use the article below to see where it fits and where it does not.

## Comparison at a glance

| Criterion | Trezor Safe 5 | Trezor Safe 3 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Secure element | EAL6+ | EAL6+ |
| Screen | 1.54-inch 240×240 color touchscreen | 0.96-inch monochrome OLED |
| Input | Touchscreen + haptic feedback | Physical buttons |
| Weight | About 23 g in current specs | About 14 g in current specs |
| Backup/security role | Hardware-isolated signing and recovery | Hardware-isolated signing and recovery |
| Best reason to upgrade | Larger, more comfortable verification/input | Lower-cost/simple hardware workflow |

## Usability can be a security feature

A better screen does not strengthen cryptography by itself, but it can improve the user's ability to verify addresses, prompts and recovery operations. Safe 5's touchscreen and haptics are particularly relevant to users who sign frequently or dislike navigating long information with buttons.

Safe 3's smaller display and button navigation are more utilitarian. For long-term cold-storage users who interact infrequently, that may be perfectly acceptable.

## Backup and asset support

Trezor's current ecosystem supports many assets, but exact coin/token support should be checked per network and software integration. Users also need to understand the backup standard they use and whether any passphrase is part of recovery.

The hardware device can be replaced if the recovery backup is intact. Conversely, a working device is not a durable recovery plan if the only backup is lost.

## Where Terenval fits

The Terenval comparison belongs in a “hardware + mobile” architecture section. Terenval can manage smaller operational balances and supported on-chain activity, while Safe 3 or Safe 5 isolates larger long-term funds from the daily-use phone. This is role separation, not feature equivalence.

Refresh retail pricing and compatibility; preserve Trezor's own distinction that the models target different UX levels rather than inventing a security score.
