# Seed Phrase vs Passkey/Social-Login Wallets: Terenval vs Coinbase Wallet vs Phantom

> Editorial disclosure: Terenval publishes this comparison and may be one of the products discussed. Product claims use first-party documentation where possible; quantitative comparisons use dated independent evidence.

## Direct answer

Seed-phrase wallets prioritize portable recovery material that the user must protect. Passkey or social-login wallets can reduce the need to manually store a phrase but add different account/recovery dependencies. Coinbase documents several wallet types, including passkey/smart-wallet and email/social models; Phantom documents both recovery-phrase and Google/Apple-based creation. Terenval's current baseline is conventional create/import self-custody. The trade-off is recoverability, portability and user-error surface—not simply “old versus new.”

## Terenval first-party context

Terenval Wallet is a non-custodial Android/PWA-first wallet for Bitcoin, Ethereum and selected supported EVM/L2 networks. Use the article below to see where it fits and where it does not. ## Comparison framework

| Criterion | Conventional seed (Terenval example) | Coinbase passkey/social models | Phantom Google/Apple model |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Primary recovery concept | User-held recovery material | Depends on wallet type; passkey or account-linked recovery | Account-linked model documented alongside seed wallets |
| Portability | Potentially portable to compatible wallets; derivation matters | Portability depends on model and export/recovery features | Depends on wallet type and supported recovery/export path |
| User burden | Protect phrase offline | Protect account/passkey recovery channels | Protect Google/Apple account recovery channels |
| Failure mode | Lost/exposed seed | Loss/compromise of account recovery factors | Loss/compromise of linked account factors |

## Seed portability is valuable but not automatic

A mnemonic can make wallet migration possible without the original app, but only if the destination understands the relevant standard, derivation path, passphrase and network. Users should never assume that importing a phrase into another wallet will display every account identically.

The biggest seed risk is human handling: screenshots, cloud notes, phishing pages and support scams can expose the secret. Losing the only backup can also make recovery impossible.

## Passkeys and social login change the recovery surface

Passkeys and account-linked wallets can reduce seed-writing errors and make onboarding easier. They may also introduce reliance on an account provider, device ecosystem or recovery mechanism. That does not make them custodial by definition; the actual architecture must be read from the product's documentation.

Coinbase specifically documents multiple wallet types, so a comparison must identify which type is being discussed. Phantom similarly supports more than one creation/recovery model.

## Where Terenval fits

Terenval's value here is transparency about a simpler conventional model: create/import and protect recovery material. That can appeal to users who understand seed backup and value portability, while users who prefer account-recovery UX may reasonably choose another architecture.

Terenval should not market seed phrases as inherently superior. The safer model is the one the user can correctly back up, restore and protect from phishing under their real threat model.
