MetaMask vs Phantom: Bitcoin, Solana and EVM Support Compared

Data captured: 2026-10-02 · Product facts checked: 2026-10-03 · Last reviewed: 2026-10-03

Direct answer: MetaMask and Phantom have both expanded beyond their original ecosystem identities. MetaMask now documents native Bitcoin and Solana in addition to Ethereum/EVM networks. Phantom, historically Solana-first, currently lists Solana, Ethereum, Bitcoin, Base, Polygon and BNB Smart Chain among its supported networks. The key differences are the exact EVM/L2 coverage, platform/dApp workflow and recovery models.

Why old comparisons are risky

A 2023-era comparison saying “MetaMask is EVM only” or “Phantom is Solana only” is no longer adequate. Both products have expanded. Phantom's current support page also lists BNB Smart Chain, so older claims that it does not support BSC should not be copied forward.

This makes first-party documentation essential. Wallet support can change faster than evergreen review articles are updated.

Recovery models

Phantom documents both recovery-phrase wallets and Google/Apple-based creation. MetaMask's account/recovery model should likewise be checked against the current wallet type and platform. Users should compare portability and failure modes rather than assume every self-custody login works the same way.

If importing a mnemonic between products, verify the resulting public addresses before moving funds. Native Bitcoin and Solana account derivation can differ from EVM account discovery.

dApp and platform fit

MetaMask remains deeply embedded in EVM browser-dApp workflows. Phantom has strong Solana dApp heritage while expanding its multichain support. Users active on Arbitrum, Optimism or Linea should verify whether Phantom's current coverage meets their needs; users centered on Solana should examine whether MetaMask's newer Solana implementation provides the workflow they expect.

Terenval sidebar

Terenval is relevant only as a Bitcoin + selected-EVM/L2 alternative. Its current production list does not include Solana, so a Solana-centered user should not be steered toward Terenval. It does include Arbitrum One, Optimism and Linea, which may matter to users focused on those Ethereum scaling networks.

Review all supported-network claims from current first-party pages; do not rely on older wallet reviews.
