# Ethereum vs Base: Fees, DeFi Liquidity and Security Trade-Offs for Wallet Users

> Editorial disclosure: Terenval publishes this comparison and may be one of the products discussed. Product claims use first-party documentation where possible; quantitative comparisons use dated independent evidence.

## Direct answer

Ethereum Mainnet offers the deepest overall DeFi liquidity and the base-layer settlement environment, but users often face higher transaction costs. Base is an Ethereum L2 designed to execute transactions more cheaply while ultimately relying on Ethereum-related settlement/security mechanisms and additional L2 infrastructure. For everyday users, the decision is usually task-specific: application availability, asset liquidity, bridge/on-ramp route, transaction fee and the risks of the L2 model.

## Dated quantitative evidence

2 Oct 2026: Ethereum DeFi TVL about $54.47B; Base about $6.46B; L2BEAT Base value secured about $16.41B.

## Terenval first-party context

Terenval Wallet is a non-custodial Android/PWA-first wallet for Bitcoin, Ethereum and selected supported EVM/L2 networks. Use the article below to see where it fits and where it does not. > **Editorial disclosure:** Network metrics use L2BEAT and DeFiLlama. Terenval supports both network contexts but does not control their fees, liquidity or security assumptions.

**Data captured — 2 October 2026:** Ethereum DeFi TVL approximately **$54.47B**; Base DeFi TVL approximately **$6.46B**; L2BEAT Base value secured approximately **$16.41B**. These are snapshots, not permanent rankings.

## Snapshot comparison

| Criterion | Ethereum | Base |
| --- | --- | --- |
| DeFi TVL (2 Oct 2026) | ~$54.47B | ~$6.46B |
| L2BEAT value secured | Not an L2 metric | ~$16.41B |
| Typical fee profile | Usually materially higher than L2s | Lower-cost execution in many common tasks |
| Ecosystem/liquidity | Broadest Ethereum DeFi depth | Large and growing L2 ecosystem |
| Moving between them | Mainnet transaction/on-ramp | Bridge or direct exchange withdrawal can be required |
| Gas | ETH | ETH on Base |

## TVL is context, not a verdict

Ethereum's much larger DeFi TVL suggests broader capital depth at the chain level, but a user does not trade against “chain TVL.” The relevant metric is liquidity in the exact market or pool they plan to use. A specific Base market can offer enough liquidity and lower execution cost for a task even though Ethereum is larger overall.

## Fees need same-minute comparison

Fee claims should be captured for the same action and time. Sending ETH, transferring USDC and executing a complex swap consume different gas. Base is often much cheaper, but users must also include bridge costs and any cost of returning assets to Ethereum or an exchange.

## Security and L2 assumptions

Base is not simply “Ethereum with cheaper gas.” L2 users accept additional infrastructure assumptions such as sequencer operation, bridge design and upgrade mechanisms. Those trade-offs should be read from current L2 documentation/L2BEAT rather than hidden behind a fee table.

## Terenval workflow

Terenval supports Ethereum and Base in the same wallet interface. That makes it useful for a neutral “same wallet, different network” walkthrough: choose the network, verify the recipient supports it, confirm ETH gas exists on that network, compare the fee and use a small test transfer when moving meaningful value.
