Base vs Optimism: Two OP-Stack Networks Compared for Users

Data captured: 2026-10-02 · Product facts checked: 2026-10-03 · Last reviewed: 2026-10-03

Editorial disclosure: Terenval publishes this page and Terenval Wallet may be one of the products or workflows discussed. Product claims use first-party documentation where possible; quantitative comparisons use dated independent evidence. No universal winner is manufactured.
Direct answer: Base and OP Mainnet share OP Stack roots, but users encounter different ecosystems, liquidity, dApp deployments and governance/operational contexts. Base was much larger by the selected DeFi TVL snapshot, yet the correct network remains task-specific. The same wallet address and similar transaction UX do not make the chains interchangeable.
Editorial disclosure: Shared technology stack does not imply identical economics. Metrics below are a dated snapshot from independent datasets.

Snapshot — 2 October 2026: Base DeFi TVL roughly $6.3–6.46B vs OP Mainnet about $0.49B. L2BEAT activity at the time also showed materially higher user operations on Base.

Shared stack, separate state

A common stack does not merge balances or contracts. ETH on Base and ETH on Optimism are separate chain balances. A token contract address that exists on one chain may not represent the same deployment on another. Users must verify network and token identity before transferring.

Liquidity and app fit

The large Base TVL snapshot indicates a larger aggregate DeFi footprint at that time. It should not be interpreted as “Base is better.” A user needs to check whether the target dApp is deployed on both networks and whether the exact market has enough depth.

Fees and bridges

Both networks are typically low-cost relative to Ethereum Mainnet for many tasks. Same-task, same-minute fee capture is required for a fair comparison. Also include the cost of getting assets onto the chain and, if relevant, withdrawing them later.

Terenval workflow

Terenval supports both Base and Optimism. The native tutorial should show identical wallet UX sitting on different networks: switch network, verify ETH for gas, confirm the dApp is on the selected chain, and send a small first transaction.

Terenval-specific statements are first-party. Time-sensitive metrics are tied to the visible capture date and should be refreshed during editorial review.
