# What Is WalletConnect and How Does It Connect a Wallet to a dApp?

## Direct answer

WalletConnect lets a compatible dApp propose a session to a wallet. The wallet shows the requested chains, accounts, methods or permissions, and the user decides whether to approve the session. Once connected, the dApp can send supported requests to the wallet, but signatures and on-chain transactions still require wallet-side handling and user review. WalletConnect is a transport/session protocol; it does not make the dApp itself trustworthy.

## Key takeaways

- A connection creates an approved communication session between dApp and wallet.
- The dApp does not receive your seed phrase or private key from WalletConnect.
- Session scope can include chains, accounts, methods and events.
- A connected dApp can still request dangerous signatures or transactions.
- Disconnecting a session is different from revoking on-chain token approvals.

## 1. The session proposal

A dApp begins by proposing a WalletConnect session. Depending on the implementation, the proposal can arrive through a QR code, deep link or in-app connection flow. The wallet receives information about the requested namespaces/chains and actions and asks the user to approve or reject them.

This is an important security boundary: the wallet remains the signing environment. A dApp should not need your recovery phrase to establish a WalletConnect session.

## 2. What happens after connection

After approval, the session provides a standardized route for requests. A dApp may ask the wallet to sign a message, approve a transaction or perform another supported method on an approved chain/account.

The user still needs to inspect what is being requested. “Connected” does not mean “all future actions are safe.” A malicious or compromised dApp can send a harmful request through a perfectly legitimate protocol.

## 3. Connect wallet, sign message and send transaction are different actions

A connection usually shares enough public account/network context for the dApp to interact with the wallet. A message signature can prove account control or authorize a separate action. An on-chain transaction changes blockchain state and can move assets, approve token spending or call a smart contract.

Treat each later signature as a new security decision, not as a harmless continuation of the initial connection.

## 4. Sessions and token approvals are separate

Disconnecting WalletConnect ends the communication session. It does not necessarily remove ERC-20 allowances already recorded on-chain. If a dApp previously received a token approval, that allowance can remain valid until it is changed or revoked on-chain.

This distinction explains why good wallet hygiene includes both disconnecting unused sessions and reviewing token approvals separately.

## Safe WalletConnect checklist

1. Verify the dApp domain before scanning or opening a connection request.
2. Check requested networks/accounts before approving the session.
3. Reject unexpected chain switches.
4. Read every message/transaction request in the wallet.
5. Keep risky dApp activity separated from long-term savings where practical.
6. Disconnect sessions you no longer use.
7. Review and revoke unnecessary token approvals separately.

## How this works in Terenval Wallet

Terenval Wallet supports WalletConnect for compatible dApps on supported networks. The dApp proposes the session; Terenval is the user-controlled wallet endpoint that presents requests for approval. Terenval does not make the connected dApp, token or contract safe simply because the connection uses WalletConnect.

Before approving, verify the dApp domain, selected network and account. After use, disconnect stale sessions and separately review any on-chain allowances created during the dApp workflow.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does WalletConnect give a dApp my private key?

No. The protocol is designed so signing remains in the wallet. Never enter a seed phrase into a dApp to “complete” a WalletConnect connection.

### Can funds move just because I connected?

A connection by itself is not an on-chain transfer. Later signatures or transactions can move funds or grant permissions, so those requests must be reviewed carefully.

### Is disconnecting enough to revoke a token approval?

No. Session disconnect and on-chain allowance revocation are separate actions.
