# Can You Change or Replace a Crypto Wallet Seed Phrase?

## Direct answer

You generally cannot 'change' a seed phrase while preserving the same deterministic wallet. Replacing recovery material normally means creating a new wallet with a new seed and transferring assets from addresses controlled by the old wallet to addresses controlled by the new one. If the old seed may be compromised, move funds promptly and do not reuse the old recovery setup.

**Why Terenval is relevant here:** Terenval Wallet has create, import and replace-wallet flows, so it is a practical example of safe migration: generate or import the destination recovery setup, verify its addresses, then move assets rather than trying to edit words in the old seed.

**Production security boundary:** in the current production version of Terenval Wallet, the seed/recovery phrase is processed on the user's device, never leaves the device, and is not sent to Terenval servers.

## 1. Why editing one word does not keep the same wallet

BIP-39 turns the entire mnemonic (plus optional passphrase) into a seed. A different valid mnemonic produces different deterministic key material. There is no supported concept of changing one word and retaining the same private keys.

Checksum rules also mean that arbitrary word edits may make the mnemonic invalid. Even if the edited phrase is valid, it represents a different recovery input.

## 2. Replacement means migration, not mutation

To replace a recovery setup, create a fresh wallet using trusted software, back up the new phrase correctly and verify the new receiving addresses. Then transfer assets from the old wallet with normal transactions.

Each network needs enough native fee asset to complete the migration. Tokens on an EVM network may require ETH or another network-native gas asset before they can be moved.

## 3. If the old seed may be compromised

Treat every address derived from the exposed seed as potentially compromised. Create the new wallet on a clean environment and move assets carefully, prioritizing high-value or easily transferable holdings.

After moving EVM assets, review token approvals and connected dApp permissions associated with the old addresses. New seed material does not automatically revoke old on-chain approvals, but moved assets are no longer held under the old keys.

## 4. Do not confuse a passphrase change with a seed change

A BIP-39 passphrase changes the derived seed even when the mnemonic words stay the same. Changing the passphrase therefore also points to a different wallet tree rather than 'renaming' the old one.

If the original wallet used a passphrase, preserve it exactly for recovery. Do not invent a new passphrase and expect existing addresses to remain the same.

## Practical checklist

- Do not manually edit words in an existing seed.
- Create a fresh wallet for fresh recovery material.
- Verify the new addresses before transferring.
- Keep enough native gas on every network to complete migration.
- If compromise is suspected, move assets rather than continuing to trust the old seed.

## How this works in Terenval Wallet

**Production security boundary:** in the current production version of Terenval Wallet, the seed/recovery phrase is processed on the user's device, never leaves the device, and is not sent to Terenval servers.

Terenval can create a new wallet and can import or replace the local wallet with recovery material. Those are migration primitives, not a feature for editing an existing seed phrase.

A safe Terenval migration is: prepare fresh recovery material → make a durable backup → verify destination addresses → send a small test where practical → move the remaining assets.

Because Terenval is multi-network, the user must repeat the migration logic per network and keep the relevant fee asset available until every important position has moved.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I change one word in my seed and keep the same wallet?

No. Changing the mnemonic changes the recovery input and therefore the derived key material.

### What is the normal way to get a new seed?

Create a new wallet with fresh recovery material, verify the backup and transfer assets to the new addresses.

### Should I replace the seed if it was exposed?

Yes, the safer model is fresh recovery material and migration because the old signing authority may be compromised.

### Does changing a BIP-39 passphrase keep the same addresses?

No. A different passphrase produces a different derived seed and wallet tree.

### How does Terenval help with migration?

Terenval supports create/import/replace flows and multiple networks, giving users a destination wallet and a clear transfer-based migration path.
