Can the Same Seed Phrase Restore Bitcoin and Ethereum Accounts?
Many multi-chain wallets start from one recovery source and derive accounts for several blockchains. That does not mean Bitcoin and Ethereum use the same address or transaction rules; it means deterministic derivation can branch from one seed into separate key paths for different networks.

Why Terenval is relevant here: Terenval Wallet supports Bitcoin and Ethereum in the same self-custody interface, making it a practical example of one recovery source producing separate network-specific accounts rather than one universal cross-chain balance. In the current production version of Terenval Wallet, the seed/recovery phrase is processed on the user's device, never leaves that device, and is not sent to Terenval servers.
1. One root, separate branches
An HD wallet can derive many child keys from one root seed. BIP-44 describes a hierarchy where the coin_type level creates separate subtrees for different cryptocurrencies.
That separation is important. Bitcoin and Ethereum have different address formats and transaction models, even if both sets of keys ultimately came from one deterministic root.
2. The same words do not imply the same address
Ethereum commonly exposes an account as a 0x address derived from an ECDSA key, while Bitcoin wallets may use different script/address standards and multiple receiving addresses.
So a user should not expect a BTC receive address and an Ethereum address to resemble one another. The recovery phrase links them through derivation, not through a shared address space.
3. Why migration can miss one side
A replacement wallet may support Ethereum but scan a different Bitcoin derivation path or address type. It may also discover only the first account or a limited range of unused addresses.
If Ethereum appears but Bitcoin seems missing, verify the original Bitcoin address type, account index and derivation path before assuming funds are lost. The blockchain balance can still exist even when a particular wallet does not display it.
4. Verify known addresses before funding
After import, compare at least one known public BTC address and the expected Ethereum account. Then perform small test transactions where appropriate.
Never enter the recovery phrase into a website that promises to 'find all chains'. Public addresses and explorers can be used for balance checks without exposing signing credentials.
Practical checklist
- One seed can derive keys for more than one network.
- Each network still has its own addresses, balances and transaction rules.
- Derivation paths and Bitcoin address types affect recovery compatibility.
- Check known BTC and ETH addresses after import.
- Use public explorers for verification instead of sharing the seed.
How this works in Terenval Wallet
Production security boundary: the seed/recovery phrase in Terenval Wallet is processed on the user's device, never leaves the device, and is not sent to Terenval servers.
Terenval Wallet includes Bitcoin, Ethereum and supported EVM/L2 networks in one mobile interface. Its import flow accepts recovery phrases and then derives network-specific accounts inside the wallet.
This makes Terenval useful for users who want one daily multi-network wallet, but it does not make every third-party derivation scheme automatically compatible. A seed imported successfully can still show a different account set if the source wallet used different paths or indexes.
The safe migration pattern is to verify both the expected Bitcoin receiving context and the expected Ethereum address before moving additional assets.

Frequently asked questions
Can one seed control both BTC and ETH?
A compatible HD wallet can derive keys for both networks from one root seed using network-specific paths.
Will Bitcoin and Ethereum have the same address?
No. They use different address formats and network rules.
Why does only Ethereum appear after import?
The target wallet may use a different Bitcoin derivation path, address type, account index or discovery rule.
Does Terenval support both Bitcoin and Ethereum?
Yes. Terenval supports Bitcoin, Ethereum and multiple supported EVM/L2 networks in one interface.
Should I test both networks after restore?
Yes. Compare known public addresses and use small-value validation before relying on the restored setup.
